Even while the practice of publishing preprints <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prepubmed.org\/monthly_stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues to grow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we know from our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/licensing-survey\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community outreach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that there are still lots of questions regarding open licensing options, including downstream publishing implications for preprints. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, ASAPbio has worked with its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/licensing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expert committee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to draft and share a set of resources. The first is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/licensing-faq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of questions and answers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that focuses on open licensing and preprints. The FAQ includes fundamental questions such as \u201cWho holds the copyright in a manuscript?\u201d but also digs into more specific questions related to preprints like \u201cDoes the act of posting a preprint transfer copyright or sign rights away to the preprint server provider?\u201d and \u201cWhy should authors consider applying an open license to their preprints?\u201d The purpose of the FAQ is to provide useful and descriptive information to authors about how Creative Commons and open licensing operates with regard to preprints and their downstream journal publications. We hope that the resource can help researchers feel more comfortable sharing preprints under open licenses, and thus open the door to early access and collaboration possibilities with others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/licensing-faq\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3220\" src=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/FAQ-screengrab-2-1024x628.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"628\" data-id=\"3220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/FAQ-screengrab-2-1024x628.png 1024w, https:\/\/asapbio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/FAQ-screengrab-2-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/asapbio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/FAQ-screengrab-2-768x471.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/a>The second resource is a simple, 1-page infographic that explains the spectrum of openness with regard to preprint licensing. The document, which is titled \u201cHow open is your preprint?\u201d, is modeled on the earlier <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sparcopen.org\/our-work\/howopenisit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow Open Is It?\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guide produced by SPARC, PLOS, and OASPA to evaluate the openness of scholarly journals. But we know there will be changes, corrections, and additions, so we want to hear from you!
