{"id":3662,"date":"2017-04-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pl-asapbio.local\/asapbio-newsletter-vol-9\/"},"modified":"2025-03-28T21:38:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T21:38:19","slug":"asapbio-newsletter-vol-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/asapbio-newsletter-vol-9\/","title":{"rendered":"ASAPbio newsletter vol 9 \u2013 NIH encourages the use of preprints, Central Service update, ASAPbio on Twitter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear subscribers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a big month for preprints!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIH encourages preprints<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 24, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/about-nih\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s largest biomedical research agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released a landmark <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-17-050.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on preprints and other interim research products. The notice states that \u201cThe NIH encourages investigators to use interim research products, such as preprints, to speed the dissemination and enhance the rigor of their work.\u201d It explains that \u201cInterim research products can be cited anywhere other research products are cited,\u201d and indicates that after May 25, 2017, \u201cawardees can claim these products on their progress report publication list. &nbsp;They can also report them on their RPPR [\u2026] and link them to their award in their My Bibliography account.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The policy is also highly detailed, providing guidance on desirable qualities of preprint repositories and expectations for author practices (including funding and competing interests disclosures). The notice states that \u201cthe NIH strongly encourages awardees to select a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license or dedicate their work to the public domain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement was covered in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2017\/03\/nih-enables-investigators-include-draft-preprints-grant-proposals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science Magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/?articles.view\/articleNo\/49001\/title\/NIH--Grant-Applicants-Can-Cite-Preprints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Scientist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2017\/03\/31\/nih-embrace-preprints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STAT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and more information on the NIH\u2019s process can be found in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nexus.od.nih.gov\/all\/2017\/03\/28\/following-up-on-interim-research-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the NIH\u2019s Open Mike blog. The new NIH policy was developed in consideration of responses submitted to last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-17-006.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fall\u2019s RFI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of which (including ASAPbio\u2019s) can be found on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/nih-rfi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASAPbio news<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASAPbio\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/rfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RFA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a Central Service (a PubMed Central-like aggregator for preprints) will close in about 3 weeks on April 30. To prepare for the evaluation process, we\u2019ve invited external reviewers as described in the RFA. In order to ensure that a community-selected governing body can launch well ahead of the inception of the service, we are also revising a draft set of operating principles and bylaws for this board.
