{"id":3697,"date":"2016-06-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pl-asapbio.local\/summary-of-the-asapbio-funders-workshop\/"},"modified":"2025-03-28T21:38:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T21:38:30","slug":"summary-of-the-asapbio-funders-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/summary-of-the-asapbio-funders-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Summary of the ASAPbio Funders\u2019 Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The following is a message from funding agency representatives who attended our recent <a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/asapbio-funders-workshop\">Funders\u2019 Workshop<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As research funders who attended the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/asapbio-funders-workshop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASAPbio Funder\u2019s Workshop for Preprints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on May 23-24, 2016, we wish to provide a brief summary of the meeting. This follows the initial <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/352\/6288\/899.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funder\u2019s Perspective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drawn from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/meeting-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first ASAPbio Workshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held on February 16-17, 2016, and continues our desire to be transparent while the community continues to explore the value of preprints to the biomedical research enterprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this workshop, the funders were presented with a summary from the first workshop and the results of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asapbio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Preprint-server-preferences-survey.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by ASAPbio. This was followed by an open discussion of the scholarly and technical goals of a preprint service. The agenda then moved to a discussion of two exemplary models of shared governance of a resource in an international setting, Europe PubMedCentral (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe PMC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the Worldwide Protein Data Bank (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14634627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wwPDB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The final context setting for the funders discussion was provided by representatives of existing and anticipated preprint services, &nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ArXiv<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/biorxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bioRxiv<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PeerJ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/f1000research.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F1000 Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PLOS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What followed was an open session with all stakeholders present and a closed session involving only the funders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consensus of the workshop attendees reflected high enthusiasm about further development of a preprint service for the life sciences. At the end of the day, it was agreed by all in attendance that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A preprint policy that is as homogeneous as possible across funders is desired, especially in the way that preprints are considered as part of proposal grant submission and review. A subgroup of funders will draft a concept paper addressing some of the policy issues that might arise when implementing such a preprint policy. This draft will be shared with other funders for their input.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The funders asked ASAPbio to develop a proposal describing the governance, infrastructure and standards desired for a preprint service that represents the views of the broadest number of stakeholders.
