ASAPbio Residency Program

In 2025, we launched a new initiative for the most active and engaged members of our community — the ASAPbio residency program. This program supports our most active and engaged community members, placing their efforts front and center as a commitment to our people-first approach.

We support our residents with access to pro-level software (Zoom, Canva) and a dedicated fund up to $500 to support their activities.

Become an ASAPbio Resident

There are two primary routes into the ASAPbio residency program; via direct invitation or through a successful community project application.

Residents join ASAPbio for 1-year, renewable, terms. The program is open year round to new residents from either route.

If you’d like to join the residency program, please email Katie ([email protected]) to discuss your community project idea.

Our residents are the best of our community; active, engaged and knowledgeable. They are true leaders in increasing preprint awareness and adoption.

Xiuqi "Jade" Li

Bio

Xiuqi “Jade” Li recently joined the University of California, Santa Barbara, as an Open Science Librarian. She will be advancing open science principles and practices across the research life cycle, from data to dissemination. As one of the 2024 ASAPbio Fellows, Jade created a whiteboard video debunking preprint myths and contributed to evaluating the ASAPbio Preprint Review Initiative. Jade previously served as the Curriculum Fellow in Rigor, Reproducibility, and Responsibility (R3) at Harvard Medical School and completed her PhD training in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Yale University.

Project
Building on her work from the ASAPbio Fellowship and leveraging her curriculum design background, Jade is developing a series of whiteboard videos that dispel common misconceptions about preprints. She is also interested in exploring how preprints can be used to share research outputs other than primary research articles and amplify the voices of those with limited access to traditional publishing.

Melissa Chim

Bio

Melissa Chim is the first Scholarly Communications Librarian at Excelsior University where she both created and manages the university’s scholarly publishing platform and institutional repository. She holds an MLIS from St. John’s University and an MA in History from Queen Mary, the University of London, and holds certificates in open education and Creative Commons licensing. She was a SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow for their 2022-23 cohort, a Society for Scholarly Publishing Fellow for 2024, an ASAPbio Fellow for 2024, and a member of the Fulbright Specialist Roster from 2024-2027.

Project

Melissa’s project will be an open slide deck and handbook for librarians to support the use of preprints amongst faculty and graduate students. These resources will cover promoting preprints during the reference interview, utilizing institutional repositories/archives to share preprints, and raising awareness of preprints for tenure & promotion.

Sandra Franco-Iborra

Bio

Sandra Franco-Iborra works as Project Manager for scientific projects and initiatives, designing strategies to nurture and support scientific communities and strengthen the communication with the society. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience and has postdoctoral experience from Columbia University. Sandra joined the ASAPbio community in 2019 and was part of the 2020 ASAPbio Fellows cohort. Since then, she has been engaged in different preprint projects together with the amazing ASAPbio community.

Project

After having participated in many talks, seminars and workshops to promote preprint use and adoption within the life sciences, one common question we always get is what are the institutional policies promoting and rewarding preprint adoption, especially within the university environment. Sandra, together with the Resident Fellow Pablo Ranea Robles, will try to give answers to this difficult question by engaging with a local university, and starting conversations to promote the adoption of preprint-friendly policies for example, when submitting a PhD thesis for approval.

Pablo Ranea Robles

Bio

Pablo is a biologist who earned his Biology degree at the University of Granada, and his PhD in Biomedicine at the University of Barcelona. After two postdoctoral experiences in New York and Copenhagen, he is back in Granada, where he leads a research team investigating lipid metabolism and peroxisomes. He also teaches Physiology at the University of Granada. His interest in preprints and open science started from the PhD, and he is involved in several projects involved in the recognition and use of preprints, including preprint journal clubs, and institutional seminars.

Project

A key challenge in expanding preprint adoption is the lack of explicit institutional policies that encourage and reward their use. In collaboration with Sandra Franco Iborra, another ASAPbio resident, we are focusing on this critical area by partnering with a local university. Our project seeks to develop and champion new policies that facilitate preprint integration into academic practices, including their acceptance for PhD thesis submission.
